DHL Supply Chain is working to decarbonise customers’ supply chain operations, incorporating hydrogen fuel cell electric trucks for the likes of Diageo.
Since 2015, DHL Supply Chain and Diageo North America have been cultivating a robust partnership around sustainability.
This collaboration initially made headlines with the introduction of the first-ever Class 8 Orange EV yard trucks in the US.
Now, taking this commitment up a notch, the companies are incorporating two innovative hydrogen-powered fuel cell electric trucks (FCEVs) into operations across the US.
The Class 8 trucks, manufactured by Nikola Corporation, will be deployed and fuelled with a HYLA modular refueler at Diageo’s Plainfield, Illinois campus.
This deployment will not only enhance the logistics operations there but also mark Illinois as a pivotal state in embracing green transport technology.
“We’re thrilled to integrate Nikola’s hydrogen fuel cell electric trucks into our US fleet,” comments Jim Monkmeyer, President of Transportation at DHL Supply Chain.
“As a global logistics company with the goal of decarbonising its business, we’ve integrated sustainability as a fourth strategic bottom line named ‘Green Logistics of Choice’ in our newly announced Strategy 2030.
“The deployment of these fuel cell electric vehicles is one of many initiatives that demonstrates how we’re putting action behind our words.”
How is DHL working to decarbonise logistics?
The commitment DHL Supply Chain holds towards green logistics is palpable.
The company have been a trusted contract logistics partner for Diageo North America for more than two decades, growing alongside each other in the realm of sustainable operations.
Incorporating FCEVs is only a part of a broader sustainable strategy which has previously included the adoption of battery electric vehicles (EVs), the optimisation of vehicle use and routes, adopting a multimodal transport approach and aligning with US EPA SmartWay partner carriers.
These strategies have collectively contributed to significant yearly reductions in carbon emissions for both companies.
“We’re extremely excited to be a part of this partnership, delivering the first set of heavy-duty hydrogen trucks to Illinois, home to our largest manufacturing hub in North America,” continues Marsha McIntosh, President of North America Supply at Diageo.
“This initiative is part of our continued work to decarbonise our footprint in Plainfield, making our operations more efficient and sustainable.”
A greener alternative to diesel
The hydrogen fuel cell electric trucks by Nikola offer an intriguing promise: zero tailpipe emissions.
They utilise advanced fuel cell technology to convert hydrogen into electricity, effectively powering the electric motors.
These trucks boast an impressive range of up to 500 miles on a single refuel, presenting a sustainable and highly efficient, alternative to diesel-powered vehicles.
Replacing diesel trucks with these innovative FCEVs is estimated to slash carbon emissions by a staggering 80% annually. They also cut down nitrogen oxide emissions significantly.
Besides their environmental benefits, these trucks promise enhanced driver comfort and safety thanks to reduced noise and vibrations and improved visibility made possible by advanced camera technologies.
“We’re proud to work alongside visionary partners like DHL and Diageo in driving the transition to zero-emissions transportation,” adds Steve Girsky, President and CEO at Nikola.
“Their commitment to sustainability aligns perfectly with our mission and we’re honoured to provide the HYLA hydrogen as well as the hydrogen fuel cell electric trucks that power this shared goal.”
The road ahead: An expanding sustainability partnership
Diageo’s Plainfield hub is a critical piece in its regional operations, incorporating manufacturing, bottling and warehousing facilities.
With more than 10 EV yard trucks now operational at the campus and close to 100 across DHL Supply Chain facilities in North America, the journey from the first deployment of EV trucks to full-scale adoption of on-road applications illustrates a committed pathway towards sustainable logistics and transportation leadership.
Such initiatives are not just about upgrading technology or cutting down emissions; they signify a deeper, transformative movement towards sustainable business practices that DHL and Diageo continue to champion.
